A full 23.6″ / 60 cm handmade wooden chess set with no carving on the frame at all — just a wide band of smooth, hand-finished beech around a checkered field of light and dark wood, the ranks and files carved neatly into the border, and the grain doing all the decorating. If you have ever wanted a serious chess board that does not shout, this is the one: the pieces are the same hand-carved figures as on the ornamented sets, and the board lets them stand out.

Open the bronze clasps and it becomes a handmade backgammon set: clean carved points, a plain inlaid circle in the centre of each half, checkers in two woods. A luxury chess set for a modern room, a chess and backgammon set for the family table, and the board you can leave out all week without it fighting the furniture.

Specifications

Size: 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″

Material: beech wood, hand-finished and varnished

Style: classic — smooth plain frame, carved coordinates, plain backgammon field inside

Hardware: cast-bronze hinges and clasps

Handmade by Hrachya Ohanyan

What's Included

Chess and backgammon board with bronze hinges and clasps

32 hand-carved chess pieces made from beech and walnut wood, with velvet bases

32 checkers made from beech and walnut wood

Dice set

Branded carrying case

Why You'll Love It

The big board: at 60 cm the squares are generous and the pieces have room — the size serious players and living rooms both prefer.

Two games in one board: chess on the outside, backgammon inside — one piece on the shelf, two evenings of play.

Plain on purpose: no ornament to compete with the game — smooth wood, clean lines, and hand-carved pieces that carry the show.

Good to Know Before You Buy

How big is it? The chess board is 23.6″ / 60 cm square — our largest folding size, made for the table rather than the suitcase.

Is it a real chess and backgammon set? Yes. Here the workshop stops before the carving begins and finishes the wood instead — sanded, varnished, the grain left to show. It is the board for someone who wants the craft in the pieces and the proportions, not on the frame, and it ages the way good plain furniture does: quietly, and well.

About the Artist - Hrachya Ohanyan

In 1985, National Master Hrachya Ohanyan began his fine wood craft, introducing a new approach to the age-old traditions of woodworking. After many years of dedication, the Hrachya Ohanyan workshop was established in 2010. Every board passes through 14 stages of production, with 14 separate craftsmen leaving their mark before it reaches its finished form — a piece of wood artistry admired both in Armenia and around the world.
