Who makes these Armenian backgammon sets?

Every board is handcrafted by Hrachya Ohanyan, a master woodcarver based in Yerevan, Armenia. With decades of experience, he carves each piece entirely by hand — no machines, no shortcuts. His work is collected by backgammon enthusiasts across Europe, the USA, and the Middle East.

What makes these boards authentically Armenian?

Each board is rooted in Armenian visual culture — Mount Ararat silhouettes, ancient Khachkar cross-stone patterns, pomegranate motifs, and Armenian alphabet engravings. These are not generic designs with an Armenian label. They are the result of Hrachya's deep connection to his heritage, carved into every millimeter.

What wood is used to make these boards?

Hrachya works primarily with solid walnut, beech, and oak — dense hardwoods that age beautifully and handle decades of real play. The playing surface is smooth and true. Hinges, clasps, and felt lining are all hand-selected for durability and feel.

What sizes are available?

Armenian backgammon boards in this collection range from compact 40×50 cm travel sets to full competition-size 50×60 cm boards. Custom sizes are available on request — contact us through the store and Hrachya will carve to your specifications.

Are these real playing sets or purely decorative?

Built for real play. The points are precision-routed, checkers roll true, and the board folds flat for storage. Many customers use these boards daily for years. The beauty is in the craft — but this is a fully functional game set first.

Where do you ship and how long does delivery take?

Every Armenian backgammon set ships worldwide directly from Yerevan, Armenia. Each board is made for you in 1 to 2 weeks, then delivery takes about 7 to 9 business days to the US, Canada and Europe. Shipping is free to the US, Canada and Europe; other countries pay a flat $100 for tracked delivery (Brazil, Chile and New Zealand $200). Orders over $600 go express with signature, free. Every order is tracked and carefully packed to protect the woodwork in transit.

Can I buy an Armenian backgammon set as a gift?

Absolutely. Each set ships in presentation packaging — ideal for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, or corporate gifts. We can include a handwritten note on request. A hand-carved Armenian backgammon board is the kind of gift that gets remembered for decades.

How do I care for my Armenian backgammon board?

Wipe with a soft dry cloth after use. Apply a thin coat of natural wood oil every few months to keep the finish rich and the wood protected. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or high humidity. Treated right, one of these boards will outlast you.

Is each Armenian backgammon board truly one of a kind?

Yes. Because each board is hand-carved by Hrachya Ohanyan, no two are identical. Grain patterns, depth of carving, and natural wood color vary from piece to piece. What you receive is a singular object — not a factory copy, not a print-on-demand design. That is the whole point.

About this collection
