WOODWORKING AS ART

Hrachya Ohanyan is an Armenian master craftsman with over four decades of experience in fine woodworking. Trained in the age-old traditions of Armenian craft, Ohanyan built his workshop around a single guiding belief: "there is a soul in the tree, which only skillful hands can give shape and colour to."

His workshop produces an array of wooden creations — backgammon boards, chess sets, watches, souvenirs, and one-of-a-kind objects — but it is his backgammon and chess pieces that have become his most celebrated work. Among his signature creations are works featuring the Masis contour, several of which have been patented for over 25 years.

Every piece that leaves the workshop passes through at least 14 stages of creation, with a dedicated master contributing their expertise at each step — a process that ensures each object is presented in flawless form to true connoisseurs of fine wood craftsmanship.

Our craftsmen possess the purest secrets of the woodworking art of our ancestors and are able to give a wand any shape. Woodworking is one of the oldest forms of engraving. Our masters are the most perfect way to know the secrets of logging-this is the next stage of wood processing, during which a pattern or a picture is created on the already treated piece of the tree, and in the end just the tree turns into a unique example of chess or backgammon.
