Armenian Backgammon Set - Carved Ornament
In Armenia this game is nardi. It is played fast and loud, over strong coffee, long past midnight, and the checkers are not placed so much as landed. A board like this is why nobody agrees to stop at one game.
At the center of the lid a carved ornament blooms, dense as lace, deep enough to hold shadow. Around it runs an unbroken knotwork border, the same interlace Armenian masters have cut into khachkars and church doors for a thousand years. Every line of it is carved by hand into solid wood and finished a deep warm brown, so the relief keeps its shadow in any light.
