Luxury Armenian Backgammon Set - Stag and Fawn with Ararat
Discover a luxury Armenian backgammon set where the wood itself becomes a landscape. The top edge of the board is cut to the twin peaks of Mount Ararat, snow-capped in pale wood, and below it an oval holds a stag with his fawn among oak leaves and firs, carved in deep relief. Diamond lattice fills the panels on either side, and a rope border runs the whole way round.
This handmade backgammon set comes from the workshop of master Hrachya Ohanyan. Inside, the playing field is inlaid in light wood with a carved ornament at each end. It is a full-size board for nardi, the game as it is played in Armenia. Handmade in Armenia.

The Story on the Lid
Mount Ararat is the mountain every Armenian looks toward, and here the master let the board's own outline take its shape, so the two peaks rise above the carving. Beneath them a stag stands with his fawn in the forest. Deer have been carved on Armenian stone and wood for centuries as a sign of grace and of the family kept safe. Nardi is what backgammon is called in Armenia, and a board like this one usually ends up on the table every evening it is in the house.
About the Artist
Hrachya Ohanyan is an Armenian master woodcarver who began his fine wood craft in 1985 and opened the Hrachya Ohanyan workshop in 2010. Cutting the board's outline to the Ararat skyline is his signature move, and you will find it on several pieces in the Hrachya Ohanyan backgammon collection.
