Two textures on one board. The frame of this luxury walnut chess set is carved right through in a deep open braid — strand over strand, with the light passing between them — and studded with cast bronze at the ranks and files. Inside that frame the checkered field of walnut and light wood is sealed under clear epoxy resin, so the squares lie glass-smooth and the grain glows beneath. A hand-carved wooden chess set that is rough and shining at the same time, carved from a single piece of solid walnut.

Open the bronze clasps and it becomes a handmade backgammon set: carved points and a carved wheel ornament in each half, all under the same clear resin, with ornate cast-bronze hinges and checkers in two woods. At 23.6″ / 60 cm it is the large board — an epoxy chess set for the table where the serious games are played, and a chess and backgammon set that will still look new when the grandchildren argue over it.

How do I look after it? Keep it out of direct sun and away from radiators. Wipe the resin fields with a soft damp cloth and dry them; use a soft brush for the open braid. Store it closed in its case.

The Braid Ornament

Braid and interlace are among the oldest ornaments in the carver's vocabulary — the same over-and-under rhythm you find on old stone crosses, on manuscript borders and on the edges of carpets. Here it is cut clean through the walnut, so the weave stands open like a real basket, and the resin-sealed fields inside it make the contrast sharper still: rough where your hands rest, smooth where the game is played.
