The board is carved from one piece of beech into a full circle 23.6″ / 60 cm across, the checkered field floats in the middle in deep red and cream, and the rim around it carries a hand-carved textured border with the ranks and files cut into the wood. The pieces match — 32 hand-carved figures painted red and white, so the whole set reads as one object from across the room.

Open the bronze clasps and the two halves swing apart to a black velvet-lined compartment where every piece has a place.
