A small handmade wooden chess set with a big personality: the frame is cut in a scalloped contour outline, and a band of pale scroll ornament runs all the way round it, worked into the dark wood so the pattern reads in two tones from across the table. Inside the border sits a checkered field of light and dark wood with the coordinates marked along the edge. At 11.8″ / 30 cm it closes into a bag with the pieces inside and goes wherever the evening takes you.

Open the brass clasps and it becomes a handmade backgammon set: two-tone points, a flower ornament in the centre of each half, checkers in light and dark wood. The Ornament

The scroll border is an old ornament from Armenian carving and manuscript margins — a running line of curls and fans that never quite repeats. Worked here in pale wood against a dark ground, it gives a small travel board the presence of a framed picture, and it is the reason this is the set people pick up first.
