Four pairs of curled leaves round an eternity whirl, carved in relief and left pale on a dark disc, with a rope ring and a ground of tiny stars. This is the 40 cm / 15.7″ Armenian wooden travel backgammon set made by Hrachya Ohanyan, contour outline. Handmade in beech, with 32 wooden checkers, dice and a carrying bag.

This is the board for the glovebox, the carry-on and the café table — the 40 cm beech board with the scalloped contour edge, at a travel price. The ornament is relief: four pairs of leaves curl outward from a centre where a small eternity sign spins, all left pale against a lowered dark ground and closed by a rope ring; around it the whole lid is cut into a fine lattice of tiny stars, with a rope border following the wavy edge.

Inside, pale drop-tipped points on a walnut-brown field, a petal wheel cut into each half and a brass hinge on the bar; the back cover carries an eternity whirl in line work at either end. For the student going abroad, the Sunday drive to the grandparents, and the player who wants the sign in a bag that fits under a seat.

Is the ornament carved? Yes — the leaves and the whirl at their centre are cut in relief from the beech and left pale, with the ground lowered and stained dark around them; the star lattice and rope borders are cut into the lid too. The whirls on the back are line work. Varnish over all; nothing is printed or applied.
