Luxury Armenian Backgammon Set - Etchmiadzin in Scrollwork
Discover a luxury Armenian backgammon set with the Mother Cathedral of Etchmiadzin carved in high relief on the lid. The dome, the belfry and the arcaded walls stand out from a finely punched ground, and deep scrolls with pomegranates and leaves curl in from both sides. The whole board is cut to a scalloped outline rather than a plain rectangle, so even closed it reads as a carved panel. Inside, the playing field is inlaid in light wood with a carved ornament at each end.
This backgammon board comes from the workshop of master Hrachya Ohanyan, carved from a single piece of wood. It is a full-size board for nardi, the game as it is played in Armenia. Handmade in Armenia.

The Story on the Lid
Etchmiadzin is where Armenia became the first Christian nation, and the Mother Cathedral there has stood since the fourth century. Armenians call it the place where the Only-Begotten descended. Carving it onto a board for nardi is an old habit in this workshop: the game belongs to the family table, and so does the cathedral.
About the Artist
Hrachya Ohanyan is an Armenian master woodcarver who began his fine wood craft in 1985 and opened the Hrachya Ohanyan workshop in 2010.
