Luxury Walnut Chess Set with Storage Basket Weave Bronze 23.6" | 60 cm

Luxury Walnut Chess Set with Storage Basket Weave with Bronze Pieces - by Hrachya Ohanyan

There is no plain surface left on this one. The whole case — top border, sides, the carved feet it stands on — is cut into a deep basket weave, strands of wood passing over and under each other corner to corner, studded with brass. Underneath the 23.6" / 60 cm playing field sits a built-in storage box that takes every piece, and the pieces themselves are ornate brass filigree. That combination is the point: a chess set with storage usually means a plain box with a board on top, and this is the opposite — a carved object that happens to hold its own army.

At this size it plays properly. The squares are wide enough for full-size pieces, nothing is cramped in a crowded middlegame, and because everything lives inside the board there is nothing to fetch, unpack or lose. You lift the lid, set up, and play. When you stop, it goes back to being furniture rather than a job to tidy away.

Every model from this workshop passes through fourteen separate stages and as much as two hundred days of work, a different craftsman at each one. On a piece carved this densely you can see exactly where that time went — in the places nobody would have checked.

Woven in Wood

Weavers and wood carvers have passed the same ornamental vocabulary between them for centuries — woven bands and geometric fields refined at the loom and the bench. This case carries that inheritance in deep-carved walnut, every strand cut by hand.

About the Master — Hrachya Ohanyan

In 1985 National Master Hrachya Ohanyan began his fine wood craft, bringing a new approach to a very old tradition. After years of that work the Hrachya Ohanyan workshop was established in 2010, making classic and original models from high-quality raw material — each set a piece of work admired at home and well beyond it.

Fourteen Stages, Up to Two Hundred Days

Every model passes through fourteen distinct phases of production. Fourteen separate craftsmen leave their mark on one piece of wood before it reaches its finished form — which is the honest reason a board like this takes the better part of a year.

A Luxury Gift Worth Giving

A wedding, a landmark birthday, a father who taught the family to play, or the one box under the Christmas tree that matters. This is the board that ends up in the front room and stays there, because there is nowhere better to put it and no reason to move it.
