Amber is the part nobody expects. Set into the dark squares of this walnut board, held in poured epoxy that lets light through to reach it, the stones glow from inside the wood rather than sitting on top of it. Around them runs a hand-carved woven border, and above the field stand ivory-toned and brass-topped pieces. It is the sort of Armenian chess set you look at for a while before it occurs to you to play on it.

Then it opens. Underneath is a full backgammon field, its points laid in the same blue epoxy, with wooden checkers and dice waiting in place. Two complete games in one 23.6" / 60 cm board, plus an embroidered velvet bag and boxed checkers. As a chess backgammon set it removes the usual compromise entirely: nothing here was made smaller or plainer to fit the second game in.

What you are really buying is time. Every board from this workshop passes through fourteen separate stages and as much as two hundred days, with a different craftsman at each one. The carving cannot be hurried, and the resin pour cannot be repeated — which is why no two of these boards have ever come out the same, and why the one that arrives is genuinely the only one like it.
