Armenian Wooden Chess & Backgammon Set - Handmade by Hrachya Ohanyan
ARMENIA is engraved along the border of this solid beech board in tall serif letters, with a grape cluster and a pomegranate — the fruit of the land — cut into the corners around a scroll-lined playing field. The silhouette curves like a shield, the beech is stained and polished deep and dark, and the grain moves under the finish like water. Made by National Master Hrachya Ohanyan in his full-size 23.6" | 60 cm format.
Two games share one board. Chess is played on the engraved field outside; open the brass clasps and a backgammon field waits inside. The set travels in a protective case.

A Board That Names Its Home
Most boards let the wood speak; this one signs its origin. The engraved letters and the fruit of the land make it the set people choose when the gift should say where it comes from - a piece of Armenia in solid wood for a table anywhere in the world.
About the Master - Hrachya Ohanyan
In 1985, National Master Hrachya Ohanyan began his fine wood craft, introducing a new approach to the age-old traditions of woodworking. After many years of dedication, the Hrachya Ohanyan workshop was established in 2010. The workshop creates Armenian, classic and original models from high-quality raw materials - each set a work of art admired both locally and internationally. Read the story of master Hrachya Ohanyan or see more of his work in the Hrachya Ohanyan chess sets collection.
14 Levels, Up to 200 Days
Every chess model passes through 14 distinct phases of production: 14 separate craftsmen make their mark on a piece of wood until it reaches its perfected form in the showrooms of Hrachya Ohanyan - a distinguished visual and qualitative experience for those who appreciate true wood artistry.
A Gift That Lasts Generations
A handmade Armenian wooden chess and backgammon set is a luxury gift that never expires - for weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, or under the Christmas tree. Solid beech, master craftsmanship and Armenia's name carved into the board: it will be played, displayed and passed on.

Frequently asked questions
What products do you make?
Handmade chess sets, backgammon boards and chess tables, carved by hand in Armenia.
Are your products handmade?
Yes. Every piece is handmade and handcrafted for you in Armenia, most of them in master carver Hrachya Ohanyan's workshop in Yerevan. That is why each one takes 1–2 weeks to make.
Do you ship worldwide from Armenia?
Yes. Shipping is free to the US, Canada and all of Europe; other countries pay a flat $100 for tracked delivery, and Brazil, Chile and New Zealand pay $200, always tracked and insured. Every piece is handmade and handcrafted for you, so it takes 1–2 weeks to make. Delivery then takes about 7–9 business days to the US, Canada, Europe and the UK; other regions may take a little longer. Orders over $600 travel by express courier with signature. Tables go by insured furniture freight and arrive about 2–4 weeks after they are finished.
Will I pay customs duties?
US and EU orders are delivered duties paid, so there is nothing more to pay on arrival. For other countries, import fees depend on local rules; write to us and we will help you estimate them.
What is your return policy?
You can return any order within 30 days of delivery, for any reason, worldwide. Faulty or damaged items return free; for change-of-mind returns the item must be unused in its original packaging and you cover return shipping. EU and UK customers also keep their full statutory rights, including a 14-day withdrawal right.
Can I talk to someone before I buy?
Yes. Call or message us on WhatsApp at +374 41 777 882 for a personal consultation about any piece. We are happy to send more photos, help with size and engraving, and answer any question.
Do you accept custom orders?
Yes. Tell us what you have in mind on WhatsApp (+374 41 777 882) or at contact@lionlaurel.com, and we will talk through the size, wood and engraving with you.
What materials do you use?
Mostly solid beech and walnut, carved by hand. Some boards add epoxy resin, amber stones or bronze details; each product page lists its own materials.
Is payment secure?
Yes. You pay through Shopify's secure checkout with all major cards, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
