Every gap between the branches on this luxury epoxy backgammon set is a pool of blue pearl resin — the trees are the wood itself, cut through and left standing on both covers. 23.6″ / 60 cm, plane tree wood, by master Hrachya Ohanyan; checkers, billiard-ball dice and case included.

The tree is cut through the pale wood like a stencil — trunks, branches and twigs left in bare grain — and the spaces between them are poured with pearlescent epoxy that shifts from sky blue to deep turquoise as the light moves, then levelled and polished flush with the wood. The pattern runs across both outer covers, so the board stands on a shelf like a small blue window whichever way it faces. Inside, the points are teal resin with scrolled tips, a wheel ornament sits in a resin ring at the heart of each half, and an ornate bronze hinge joins the bar. This is the backgammon set for the modern flat, the beach house, and the player who wanted colour on the table without giving up wood. Also known as nardi (нарды), nardy, tavla or shesh besh.

No. The branches are the wood itself, cut through and left standing; the blue is epoxy resin poured into the spaces, cured, sanded level and polished under the same finish as the wood. The teal points inside are poured the same way. Nothing is printed or painted, and the colour cannot rub off.

A Tree in Resin

Epoxy came to the Ohanyan workshop late, after decades of carving, and the masters used it the way they use everything else: around the wood, never over it. The tree is cut first and the resin comes second, so the grain stays the picture and the blue is only the sky behind it. It is also the one colour a wooden board never has on its own — which is exactly why people choose it.
