Armenian Backgammon Set - Mount Ararat
Discover a handmade Armenian backgammon set with Mount Ararat carved on the lid: both peaks under the clouds, a cypress in the foreground, the fields of the Ararat valley, and the word ARMENIA engraved beneath. A scalloped frame and a carved lattice border finish the lid. Inside, the playing field is engraved by hand with two carved ornaments.
This wooden backgammon set comes from the workshop of master Hrachya Ohanyan. It is made for nardi, the game as it is played in Armenia, and it comes in four sizes. Handmade in Armenia.

The Story on the Lid
Mount Ararat is the mountain every Armenian looks toward. Visible from Yerevan on a clear morning, it has stood for home and memory for centuries. On this board the master carved it as it is seen from the Ararat valley, with the fields below and a cypress in front. Nardi is what backgammon is called in Armenia, and boards like this one are played at kitchen tables and in courtyards across the country.
About the Artist
Hrachya Ohanyan is an Armenian master woodcarver who began his fine wood craft in 1985 and opened the Hrachya Ohanyan workshop in 2010. Ararat is the motif he has carved more often than any other, and this board is one of the workshop's classic Armenian models. You will find its brothers in the Hrachya Ohanyan backgammon collection.
