Twenty-seven and a half inches across. That is the first thing to understand about this board — it is the largest the workshop makes, and at that scale everything changes. The squares are wide enough that a full-size piece sits comfortably in the middle of one, the carved interlace running the border has room to actually be read rather than glimpsed, and the epoxy detailing catches light across a distance most boards never get to use.

The interlace itself is the reason to own it. Strands passing over and under each other around the whole frame, every crossing cut by hand and every one of them needing to line up, because on a border this long the eye finds a single mistake immediately. Filled and finished with epoxy resin, it ends up somewhere between carving and jewellery — glossy where the light hits, deep in the shadows.

And it is two games. Chess on the outer face, backgammon within, on one 27.5" / 70 cm board that works equally as a playing surface and as the object a room is arranged around. Every model from this workshop goes through fourteen stages of production and as long as two hundred days, with a different craftsman at each one. You can see where that time went.

Every model passes through fourteen distinct phases of production. Fourteen separate craftsmen leave their mark on one piece of wood before it reaches its finished form — which is the honest reason a board of this size takes the better part of a year.
