Armenian Backgammon Set - Gandzasar and Shushi
Discover a handmade Armenian backgammon set that carries two of Artsakh's landmarks, one on each outer panel. Gandzasar Monastery is engraved on the first, its conical dome and stone roofs drawn line by line into pale inlaid wood, with the name Գանձասար written beneath in Armenian script. Turn the board over and the fortress walls of Shushi rise on the second panel, captioned Շուշի. Both sit inside scalloped ovals filled with fine lattice, and a carved braid border runs around the whole board.
This wooden backgammon set comes from the workshop of master Hrachya Ohanyan. It is a full-size board for nardi, the game as it is played in Armenia. Handmade in Armenia.

The Story on the Lid
Gandzasar means treasure mountain. The monastery has stood above the Khachen valley since the thirteenth century, and its carved dome is one of the finest things Armenian masons ever made. Shushi, on its cliff, was the fortress town that guarded the road to it. Engraving them together on a board for nardi is a quiet way of keeping both close, on a table where the family sits every evening.
About the Artist

Hrachya Ohanyan is an Armenian master woodcarver who began his fine wood craft in 1985 and opened the Hrachya Ohanyan workshop in 2010. Alongside the deep relief boards, the workshop engraves Armenian churches and towns in fine line work like this one. See the range in the Hrachya Ohanyan backgammon collection.
