A black bull charging from an amber sky on one cover, a white horse galloping on the other, both painted in oils under clear epoxy. This is the 60 cm / 23.6″ luxury wooden backgammon set made by Hrachya Ohanyan, classic outline, two-sided. Handmade in walnut, resin-filled points inside, 32 checkers, dice cut from billiard balls and a branded case.

This is the board for the ranch house, the man who keeps horses, and the player who wants a painting on the table rather than a carving. The bull comes straight at you, head low, dust rising gold behind him; on the other cover the white horse tosses its mane across a sky of smoke and amber. Both are oil paintings on the walnut, poured over with clear epoxy and polished, so the brushwork sits as if under glass, and a carved leaf moulding frames each one to the corners.

Inside, the pale walnut carries points filled with a tortoiseshell resin — amber, brown and red swirled together — under carved fleur-de-lys tips, a petal wheel in a scrolled ring filled the same way on each half, and a brass hinge stamped with the maker's mark. For the stud farm office, the fiftieth birthday, and the player who wants two animals and no plain side.

Is the painting a print? No. Each cover is painted by hand in oils directly onto the walnut — the painter's tones vary a little from board to board, so no two are identical — then clear epoxy is poured over it, cured and polished, so the brushwork lies under a hard, glassy layer. The points and rings inside are filled with tinted resin. Nothing is printed or applied.

National Master Hrachya Ohanyan began his fine woodcraft in 1985 and founded his workshop in Yerevan in 2010.
