Classic Wooden Backgammon Set in Green

Classic Wooden Backgammon Set in Green, by Hrachya Ohanyan

Green — not painted, stained, so the beech grain still runs through it like light through leaves. This classic backgammon set keeps its cover plain and lets the colour do the work: a deep bottle green under a clear varnish, a clean square outline, two bronze clasps and nothing else. Master Hrachya Ohanyan makes it for the person who has seen a hundred brown boards and wants the one that is different without shouting about it. A handmade wooden backgammon set at 23.6″ / 60 cm, from one piece of wood.

Undo the clasps and the 23.6″ / 60 cm wooden backgammon board opens on a green field with pale beech at its heart: a wheel ornament in a scrolled ring worked into each half, points alternating pale wood and green, tipped with fleur-de-lys flourishes, and ornate bronze hinges on the centre bar. Thirty-two checkers in light and dark wood, a dice set and the branded carrying case come with it. This is the handmade backgammon board for the library, the study, and the corner of the room where the good chair is.

Why You'll Love It

• Green you can see the wood through: a stain, not a paint — the grain runs under the colour, and every board takes it a little differently.
• Pale on green inside: the wheel ornaments and the light points glow against the green field — the game has rarely looked better set up.
• Ready for the table: full-size 23.6″ / 60 cm board, checkers in light and dark wood, dice and a carrying case — open it and play.

Good to Know Before You Buy

How big is it? Open, the board is 23.6″ / 60 cm square — the standard full size for a living-room table. Closed, it is 23.6″ × 11.8″ / 60 × 30 cm and stands on its own edge.

Is it painted? No — the green is a stain that soaks into the wood under a clear varnish, so the beech grain shows through it and it will not chip or peel. Inside, the wheel ornaments and the pale points are the natural beech left bare against the green.

What about shipping and returns? Shipping is free to the US, Canada and Europe, always tracked; other countries pay a flat $100 (Brazil, Chile and New Zealand $200). Every set is covered by our 30-day returns.

Can I add a name or a date? Yes — choose the engraving option on this page and tell us the text. A name or a date turns it into a personalized backgammon set, and it is the detail people remember years later.

How do I look after it? Keep it out of direct sun and away from radiators, wipe with a dry soft cloth, and store it closed in the case.

Why Green?

Backgammon boards in the Caucasus have always been brown because the wood is brown; colour is a newer freedom. The workshop tried green on a plain classic board and kept it, because it does something a carved cover cannot: it changes the whole room. On a dark shelf it reads as a book; on a table it reads as an invitation. And the game underneath is the same nardi it has always been.
