Luxury Walnut Backgammon Set - Tall Ship Under Sail

Luxury Walnut Backgammon Set - Tall Ship Under Sail, by Hrachya Ohanyan

A tall ship leans into the wind across the cover of this board — every sail filled, the rigging cut line by line, the hull riding a carved sea. Master Hrachya Ohanyan set the ship inside a scalloped frame and surrounded it with a basket-weave ground so dense you want to run your hand over it, then finished the whole cover with a carved rope border. It is a luxury walnut backgammon set in the truest sense: dark walnut, deep relief, and a subject that has meant journeys and homecomings for as long as people have carved wood.

Open the cast-bronze clasps and the full 23.6″ / 60 cm board is waiting inside: walnut points inlaid in light wood, a carved sun ornament at the heart of each half, and thirty-two checkers turned from walnut and beech. This is the handmade wooden backgammon set for someone who loves the sea, the captain's table, or simply the finest nardi board in the room.

Why You'll Love It

• A ship carved, not printed: the sails, rigging and waves stand out of the walnut in deep relief — each one cut by hand in the Hrachya Ohanyan workshop.
• Walnut through and through: the board, the frame and the dark checkers are all walnut — the wood that gives a luxury backgammon set its colour and weight.
• Ready for the table: full-size 23.6″ / 60 cm board, checkers in light and dark wood, dice and a carrying case — open it and play.

Good to Know Before You Buy

How big is it? Open, the board is 23.6″ / 60 cm square — the standard full size for a living-room or study table. Closed, it is 23.6″ × 11.8″ / 60 × 30 cm and stands on its edge like a book.

Is the ship carved or printed? Carved. The sails, the basket-weave and the rope border are all cut into the walnut by hand and then varnished — you feel every line under your fingers.

What about shipping and returns? Shipping is free to the US, Canada and Europe, always tracked; other countries pay a flat $100 (Brazil, Chile and New Zealand $200). Every set is covered by our 30-day returns.

Can I add a name or a date? Yes — choose the engraving option on this page and tell us the text. A name, a boat's name or a date turns it into a personalized backgammon set that is truly theirs.

How do I look after it? Keep it out of direct sun and away from radiators, wipe with a dry soft cloth, and store it closed in the case. Walnut only grows deeper in colour with the years.

The Ship

A ship under full sail has always meant the same thing: someone is going somewhere, and someone is waiting for them to come back. Carvers have put ships on chests, doors and ceiling beams for centuries — as a blessing for the voyage and a promise of return. On a backgammon board the image fits perfectly. Nardi is a game of luck and nerve, dice and wind, and the players who love it most are the ones who know that the sea, like the board, always gives you another turn.

About the Artist - Hrachya Ohanyan

In 1985, National Master Hrachya Ohanyan began his fine wood craft, introducing a new approach to the age-old traditions of woodworking. After many years of dedication, the Hrachya Ohanyan workshop was established in 2010. Every board passes through 14 stages of production, with 14 separate craftsmen leaving their mark before it reaches its finished form — a piece of wood artistry admired both in Armenia and around the world.
