A bouquet of roses — blooms, buds, leaves and berries — carved in deep relief on one cover; a tree of life, roots and all, on the other. This is the 60 cm / 23.6″ luxury wooden backgammon set made by Hrachya Ohanyan, classic outline, two-sided. Handmade in walnut, with 32 checkers, dice from billiard balls and a branded case.

This is the board for the anniversary, the mother who keeps roses on the table, and the player who wants a different picture on each side. Each rose is cut petal by petal, the outer ones curling back, the buds still closed, with serrated leaves and a spray of berries between them, all on a stippled ground inside a rope-and-bead ring. Either side, cusped panels of fine star stipple, diamond lattice at the corners and rope-and-bead borders to the rim.

Turn it over and a tree stands on the other disc, trunk twisting up from spread roots, leaves fanned and cupped, a berry at each tip. Inside, natural walnut and line work: cross-hatched points under fleur-de-lys tips, a faceted gem on each half, a stamped brass hinge on the bar. For the ruby wedding, the new house, and the player who wants flowers on the table all year.

Good to Know Before You Buy

What is on the inside of the board? Natural walnut with the game cut in line work: the points cross-hatched with fleur-de-lys tips, and on each half a faceted gem drawn in fine lines instead of the usual petal wheel. The roses and the tree on the covers are carved in deep relief into the same walnut, and the board is varnished. Nothing is printed or applied.

National Master Hrachya Ohanyan began his fine woodcraft in 1985 and founded his workshop in Yerevan in 2010.
