Armenian Backgammon Set - Pomegranate Tree of Life
Discover a handmade Armenian backgammon set with a Tree of Life carved on the lid, its branches heavy with pomegranates. The carving sits inside a border of fine lattice work, and inside the board the playing field is cut by hand with spear-shaped points and two carved ornaments. Cast bronze hinges and clasps close it.
This wooden backgammon set comes from the workshop of master Hrachya Ohanyan. It is made for nardi, the game as it is played in Armenia, and it comes in three sizes. Handmade in Armenia.

The Story on the Lid
The pomegranate is the fruit of Armenia. It stands for life, abundance and good fortune, and it is carved, painted and poured into wine across the country. The Tree of Life is older still: roots below, branches above, the generations of a family joined in one trunk. Carved together, they turn a board for nardi into a wish for the people who play on it.
About the Artist
Hrachya Ohanyan is an Armenian master woodcarver who began his fine wood craft in 1985 and opened the Hrachya Ohanyan workshop in 2010. The pomegranate is a motif he returns to again and again, in the panel he holds in the photo and on boards like this one, which sits with its cousins in the Hrachya Ohanyan backgammon collection.
