Wooden Backgammon Set Hand Carved - BMW Emblem

Wooden Backgammon Set Hand Carved - BMW Emblem, by Hrachya Ohanyan

For the one who would rather be driving. The BMW roundel sits in the centre of the cover, quartered in pale beech and dark stain inside a double ring, the three letters standing out in light wood — set on a lobed cartouche of stippled ground, framed by a carved rope ring and surrounded by a field of lattice and a beaded border. Master Hrachya Ohanyan cut the whole board from one piece of beech and stained it a deep honey brown so the emblem reads from across the garage, or the living room. A handmade wooden backgammon set hand-carved at the full 23.6″ / 60 cm size, for the person whose car is the second thing they would save in a fire — and whose nardi board is the first.

Undo the cast-bronze clasps and the 23.6″ / 60 cm hand-carved wooden backgammon board keeps the badge going inside: a BMW roundel in pale wood at the heart of each half, where the wheel ornament would usually be, pale points tipped with carved fleur-de-lys flourishes, and ornate bronze hinges on the centre bar. Thirty-two checkers in light and dark wood, a dice set and the branded carrying case come with it. This is the handmade backgammon board for the Sunday when the car stays in the garage and the friends come over anyway.

Why You'll Love It

• A badge, not a sticker: the roundel is worked into the wood itself — pale beech against dark stain — and the lattice, rope and cartouche around it are cut by hand in the Hrachya Ohanyan workshop, so no two boards come out the same.
• The emblem inside too: open the board and a roundel sits at the centre of each half, so the theme plays through the whole game.
• Ready for the table: full-size 23.6″ / 60 cm board, checkers in light and dark wood, dice and a carrying case — open it and play.

Good to Know Before You Buy

How big is it? Open, the board is 23.6″ / 60 cm square — the standard full size for a living-room table. Closed, it is 23.6″ × 11.8″ / 60 × 30 cm and stands on its own edge.

Is the carving real? Yes. The lattice, the rope and beaded borders, the cartouche and the flourishes on the points are all cut into the wood by hand, not printed or pressed. The roundel is pale beech left bare against the dark stain, under the varnish — it will not peel or fade.

What about shipping and returns? Shipping is free to the US, Canada and Europe, always tracked; other countries pay a flat $100 (Brazil, Chile and New Zealand $200). Every set is covered by our 30-day returns.

Can I add a name or a date? Yes — choose the engraving option on this page and tell us the text. A name or a date turns it into a personalized backgammon set, and it is the detail people remember years later.

How do I look after it? Keep it out of direct sun and away from radiators, wipe with a dry soft cloth, and store it closed in the case.

The Roundel

The BMW badge has been a quartered circle since 1917 — blue and white, the colours of Bavaria, though the story most people tell is the spinning propeller, a piece of 1929 advertising that stuck. In wood it loses its colours and keeps its shape, and the shape is what matters: a circle in a circle, four quarters, three letters, perfectly balanced — which is also a fair description of a good game of nardi. Put it on the cover and every guest who drives one will notice before they sit down.

About the Artist - Hrachya Ohanyan

In 1985, National Master Hrachya Ohanyan began his fine wood craft, introducing a new approach to the age-old traditions of woodworking. After many years of dedication, the Hrachya Ohanyan workshop was established in 2010. Every board passes through 14 stages of production, with 14 separate craftsmen leaving their mark before it reaches its finished form — a piece of wood artistry admired both in Armenia and around the world.
