Wooden Chess & Backgammon Set Carpet Pattern - Handmade by Hrachya Ohanyan
Rows of small diamonds and squares run around this board in bands, engraved the way a hand-knotted rug is bordered — the same geometry, cut into wood instead of knotted in wool. Made by National Master Hrachya Ohanyan in an 11.8" | 30 cm format: the true travel size, and the most detailed carpet board he makes at this scale.
Two games share one board. Chess is played on the lettered and numbered field outside; open the brass clasp and a backgammon field waits inside, a carpet-star ornament engraved at the heart of each half. The checkers arrive in their own gift box, and the set travels in a canvas case with a handle.
What's Included
- Folding chess board with backgammon field inside
- Full set of hand-turned chess pieces, light and dark

Why This Set Is Special
- A carpet-style diamond border engraved by hand - no two boards are ever identical
- Two games in one board: chess on top, backgammon inside
- A true travel size from a National Master's workshop
Woven in Wood
Carpet weavers and wood carvers have passed ornamental patterns from generation to generation - braids and geometric fields that scholars trace back centuries. This board translates that textile heritage into carved wood: a rug you can play on, one no moth will ever reach.
About the Master - Hrachya Ohanyan
In 1985, National Master Ohanyan began his fine wood craft, introducing a new approach to the age-old traditions of woodworking. After many years of dedication, the Hrachya Ohanyan workshop was established in 2010. The workshop creates classic and original models from high-quality raw materials - each set a work of art admired both locally and internationally. See more of his work in the Hrachya Ohanyan chess sets collection.
14 Levels, Up to 200 Days
Every chess model passes through 14 distinct phases of production: 14 separate craftsmen make their mark on a piece of wood until it reaches its perfected form in the showrooms of Hrachya Ohanyan - a distinguished visual and qualitative experience for those who appreciate true wood artistry.
A Gift That Lasts Generations
A handmade wooden chess and backgammon set is a gift that never expires - for weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, or under the Christmas tree. Solid wood, master craftsmanship and the geometry of a woven carpet: it will be played, displayed and passed on.

Frequently asked questions
What products do you make?
Handmade chess sets, backgammon boards and chess tables, carved by hand in Armenia.
Are your products handmade?
Yes. Every piece is handmade and handcrafted for you in Armenia, most of them in master carver Hrachya Ohanyan's workshop in Yerevan. That is why each one takes 1–2 weeks to make.
Do you ship worldwide from Armenia?
Yes. Shipping is free to the US, Canada and all of Europe; other countries pay a flat $100 for tracked delivery, and Brazil, Chile and New Zealand pay $200, always tracked and insured. Every piece is handmade and handcrafted for you, so it takes 1–2 weeks to make. Delivery then takes about 7–9 business days to the US, Canada, Europe and the UK; other regions may take a little longer. Orders over $600 travel by express courier with signature. Tables go by insured furniture freight and arrive about 2–4 weeks after they are finished.
Will I pay customs duties?
US and EU orders are delivered duties paid, so there is nothing more to pay on arrival. For other countries, import fees depend on local rules; write to us and we will help you estimate them.
What is your return policy?
You can return any order within 30 days of delivery, for any reason, worldwide. Faulty or damaged items return free; for change-of-mind returns the item must be unused in its original packaging and you cover return shipping. EU and UK customers also keep their full statutory rights, including a 14-day withdrawal right.
Can I talk to someone before I buy?
Yes. Call or message us on WhatsApp at +374 41 777 882 for a personal consultation about any piece. We are happy to send more photos, help with size and engraving, and answer any question.
Do you accept custom orders?
Yes. Tell us what you have in mind on WhatsApp (+374 41 777 882) or at contact@lionlaurel.com, and we will talk through the size, wood and engraving with you.
What materials do you use?
Mostly solid beech and walnut, carved by hand. Some boards add epoxy resin, amber stones or bronze details; each product page lists its own materials.
Is payment secure?
Yes. You pay through Shopify's secure checkout with all major cards, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
