A crown in the centre and rococo scrolls rolling out from it in high relief, on a stippled ground inside a scalloped contour edge. This is the 60 cm / 23.6″ wooden backgammon set made by Hrachya Ohanyan. Handmade in walnut-brown stained beech, with 32 checkers and dice.

This is the board for the player who likes their carving loud, the birthday of someone who is a little bit royal, and the living room with the gilt mirror. The scrolls are cut with space between them so each curl throws its own shadow on the stippled ground; the crown has its arches and pearls, and the rim of the lid is a bead moulding that follows every curve of the contour edge.

Inside, a dark field with pale points tipped in fleur-de-lys, an eight-petal wheel on each half and a brass hinge on the bar. The back cover holds a chequerboard between two panels of the same scrolls. For the second board in the house, and the one that gets noticed.

Good to Know Before You Buy

Is the carving real? Yes. The crown and the scrolls are carved in high relief from the solid beech, the ground around them is a fine stipple and the rim is a carved bead moulding; the chequerboard and scroll panels on the back are cut the same way. The walnut-brown colour is a stain under the varnish. Nothing is printed.
