The eternity sign carved deep — curved blades rising from a hollow centre — on a disc set into a lid of basket weave. This is the 60 cm / 23.6″ luxury Armenian wooden backgammon set made by Hrachya Ohanyan, classic outline. Handmade in walnut and hornbeam, 32 checkers, dice cut from billiard balls and a branded case.

This is the board for the Armenian who wants the sign in walnut and something for the hand to find all over the lid, and the player who prefers texture to a picture. The sign stands up from its disc as a set of curling blades, each one rounded on the edge so the light slides round it, the centre left as a hollow, all inside a rope-and-bead ring. Everywhere else the lid is basket weave, every strand cut over and under the next, with acanthus scrolls turning the corners.

Inside, the points are pale hornbeam let into the walnut with fleur-de-lys tips, the petal wheel on each half is inlaid the same way inside a scrolled ring, and a cast hinge sits on the bar; the back carries basket weave and two smaller whirls. For the Yerevan office, the diaspora wedding, and the player who wants to feel the sign, not just see it.
