A chessboard of walnut and pale hornbeam set in a carved basket-weave frame with bronze studs, a full backgammon field inside, and 32 bronze chess pieces to play it with. This is the 60 cm / 23.6″ luxury walnut chess and backgammon set made by Hrachya Ohanyan, with 32 checkers, dice cut from billiard balls and a branded carrying case.

This is the set for the study that has room for one board, the collector who wants pieces with heft, and the family that argues about which game comes first. The braid is carved in relief round the whole frame, strand over strand, and the edge is left as a curving live edge; the chess pieces are cast bronze on cream and dark bases, and the squares are inlaid, not painted.

Open the clasps and the inside is the backgammon board: a walnut field with points and wheel ornaments inlaid in pale hornbeam, the letters and numbers of the chessboard cast in bronze, the maker's stamped hinge on the bar. Two games, one heirloom. For the anniversary, the retirement, and the chess player who married a nardi player.

Is the braid carved? Yes. The basket weave is carved in relief round the whole frame from the solid walnut, the squares, points and wheel ornaments are pale hornbeam set into the wood, and the studs, letters, numbers, hinges and clasps are cast bronze. The chess pieces are cast bronze on cream and dark bases. Nothing is printed.

National Master Hrachya Ohanyan began his fine woodcraft in 1985 and founded his workshop in Yerevan in 2010.
