Octagram Walnut Backgammon Set with Contour Outline, Two-Sided by Hrachya Ohanyan
An eight-pointed star cut in facets, each point a raised pyramid, on both covers of natural walnut — in a rope-and-bead ring on a honeycomb ground. This is the 60 cm / 23.6″ wooden backgammon set made by Hrachya Ohanyan, contour outline. Handmade in walnut, with 32 wooden checkers, dice cut from billiard balls and a branded carrying case.
This is the board for the person who likes geometry — one star, cut so it catches the light eight ways. Each point is carved as a ridge with two sloping faces, so at any angle half the star is lit and half in shadow; the ring round it is roped and beaded, the lobed cartouche is filled with fine honeycomb stipple, and the scrolled contour edges curl at the corners. Turn it over and the second cover is the same — star, ring, honeycomb — with no plain side.
Inside, the walnut is left natural: the points drawn in line work with cross-hatched fill, a smaller star in line work on each half instead of a wheel, and an ornate bronze hinge on the bar. For the architect's flat, the buyer who wanted walnut and nothing figurative, and the player who likes a board that looks the same from every seat.
