Seventy centimetres across — the large size — and the ornament is scaled to match: acanthus scrolls curling round four net-filled lobes and a smooth centre. This is the 70 cm / 27.6″ luxury wooden backgammon set made by Hrachya Ohanyan, classic outline. Handmade in beech, with 32 wooden checkers, dice cut from billiard balls and a branded carrying case.

This is the board for a big table and a long evening. The scrolls are proper acanthus, each leaf curling over at the tip with a vein down its back, and between them four small lobes are filled with a carved net that catches light like fabric. A rope-and-bead ring holds it all on a stippled ground; the rest of the lid is diamond lattice in cusped panels, with a rope border at the rim.

Open, the large board gives the points real room — pale and dark, tipped with fleur-de-lys, a wheel ornament in a scrolled ring on each half, an ornate bronze hinge on the bar. The back carries two eternity whirls in rings. For the club, the family that plays in pairs, and the player who has always found ordinary boards a little tight.

Is the carving real? Yes. The acanthus leaves stand in relief, the four lobes are cross-hatched into the beech, and the ring, lattice and rope border are cut into the same surface. Stain and varnish go on last; nothing is printed, pressed or applied.
