Four broad petals, each filled with a carved net, around a smooth centre, with leaf scrolls between them. That is the cover of this 60 cm / 23.6″ wooden backgammon set made by Hrachya Ohanyan, on his classic square frame. Handmade in beech, with 32 wooden checkers, dice cut from billiard balls and a branded carrying case.

This is the board for the traditional table — square, solid, and carved to the edge. The flower is the whole show: four petals with a net pattern cut into each one, so they read as texture even from across the room, leaf scrolls curling between them, and four small buds at the compass points. A rope-and-bead ring holds it all on a stippled ground, and the rest of the lid is fine diamond lattice with cusped panels.

Inside, pale and dark points tipped with fleur-de-lys, a wheel ornament in a scrolled ring on each half, an ornate bronze hinge on the bar. A square board stacks, shelves and travels more easily than a shaped one — for the player who will use it every week and wants it to look this good doing it.

Is the carving real? Yes. The flower, its net-filled petals and the scrolls around them are cut into the beech in relief; the stippled ground and the lattice are worked into the same surface. Stain and varnish go on last, and nothing is printed or stuck on.
