A bare-chested gunman, a pistol in each hand and ROCKNROLLA in block letters across him, carved in deep relief on one cover; FREEDOM 2020 on a diamond on the other. This is the 60 cm / 23.6″ luxury wooden backgammon set made by Hrachya Ohanyan, classic outline, two-sided. Handmade in walnut and hornbeam, 32 checkers, dice and a branded case.

This is the board for the man cave with the film posters, the friend who quotes the movie, and the player who wants a board nobody at the club has seen. The figure stands up from a stippled ground, arms out, muscles and pistols cut in the round, the letters raised beside him; acanthus scrolls and lattice fill the corners in a rope-and-bead frame. On the back a diamond carries FREEDOM 2020 in raised capitals, with a cartouche either side left for the owner's own name and dates.

Inside, the points are pale hornbeam let into the walnut with fleur-de-lys tips, a pale disc on each half carries a crossed-letter monogram, the checkers are cut with the same mark, and a brass hinge stamped with the maker's mark holds the bar. For the fortieth, the groomsmen, and the player who wants their own name, dates and mark cut into a board like this one.

The figure and the lettering are carved in deep relief into walnut, the pale points and discs inside are hornbeam let into the wood, and the surface is finished with natural beeswax. Nothing is printed or applied.

How do I look after it? Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from radiators. Wipe with a dry, soft cloth and store it closed in its carrying case.

About the Artist - Hrachya Ohanyan

National Master Hrachya Ohanyan began his fine woodcraft in 1985 and founded his workshop in Yerevan in 2010.
