The small plain one: a 30 cm / 11.8″ lid of figured beech with nothing on it but the grain, and the full game carved inside — a travel-size wooden backgammon set made by Hrachya Ohanyan, classic outline. Handmade in beech, with 32 wooden checkers, dice cut from billiard balls and a branded carrying bag.

This is the board for the person who does not want a picture on it. The lid is beech with a strong flame figure across it, stained warm brown so the grain stands out in stripes, edged with a simple moulding and closed with a bronze clasp — no carving outside at all. Open it and the work is inside: pale and dark points with fleur-de-lys tips, a wheel ornament in a scrolled ring on each half, an ornate bronze hinge on the bar, all sized for a rucksack pocket.

It plays as a proper board, only shorter — a width that suits a café table, a train tray or a bunk — and the checkers and dice go in the bag with it. For the child learning the game, the commuter, the camping trip, and anyone who wants a first board before the big one.
