No picture on the lid: a dark, figured wood with a narrow scroll border cut round its edge, and the ornament kept for the inside. This is the 60 cm / 23.6″ wooden backgammon set made by Hrachya Ohanyan, classic outline. Made by hand in plywood and beech, with 32 wooden checkers, dice and a carrying bag.

This is the board for the player who wants the game, not the gallery — the entry-level plywood set, priced for the kitchen table and the student flat. The board is built in plywood and beech, stained a deep walnut brown so the figure of the grain shows through, with a thin scroll border worked round the rim and nothing else; open, the points are the pale wood left bare against the dark field, each tipped with a small drop, and a flower ornament is carved into each half.

There is a plain brass hinge on the bar, a carrying bag, and a lid that will not mind a coffee cup. For the first board, the holiday house, the office drawer, and the player who plays every night and wants nothing precious about it.
