Backgammon Set Hand Carved - Lion's Head in Scrollwork
Discover a handmade wooden backgammon set with a lion's head carved in high relief on the lid. The mane is cut strand by strand and stands proud of a finely punched ground, with deep scrollwork curling into the corners, a scalloped panel around it and a rope border running the whole way round. A bronze clasp holds the board shut.
This backgammon board comes from the workshop of master Hrachya Ohanyan. It is a full-size board for nardi, the game as it is played in Armenia. Handmade in Armenia.

The Story on the Lid
The lion has guarded Armenian gates, coats of arms and church walls for a thousand years. It stands for courage and for the strength that does not need to prove itself. Here the master carved only the head, framed in scrollwork, so the whole board looks back at you before a single die is thrown.
About the Artist
Hrachya Ohanyan is an Armenian master woodcarver who began his fine wood craft in 1985 and opened the Hrachya Ohanyan workshop in 2010. Faces in high relief are the hardest thing his carvers do, and the lion is the one they are judged by. See the rest in the Hrachya Ohanyan backgammon collection.
