A pale flower on a dark disc — eight lobes with a trefoil in each round an eight-petal heart — between leaf scrolls and panels of raised diamond lattice. This is the 60 cm / 23.6″ wooden backgammon set made by Hrachya Ohanyan, classic outline. Handmade in beech, with 32 wooden checkers, dice and a carrying bag.

This is the board for the player who wants the lid to look like lace — the beech board with the crispest cut, at a plain price. The flower is bare beech left standing on a lowered dark ground: eight round lobes, each holding a small trefoil, ring an eight-petal centre, and the pale bands between them join into one clean piece; a leaf scroll curls in a lobed panel either side, and the outer panels are a diamond lattice of raised ridges, repeated on the back.

Open, a walnut-brown field with pale drop-tipped points, a petal wheel cut into each half and a plain brass hinge. For the bride's parents, the tea table, and the player who wants a pale pattern that reads across the room.

Good to Know Before You Buy

Is the pale flower an inlay? No — it is the same piece of beech. The flower is left standing at the surface while the ground around it is lowered and stained dark, so the pale pattern is bare wood, not a separate piece or a paint. The leaf scrolls and the diamond lattice are cut the same way. Varnish goes over everything.
