The smallest one: a layered flower of pointed petals drawn in line on a pale disc, pale scroll brackets either side, lattice all round. This is the 30 cm / 11.8″ wooden travel backgammon set made by Hrachya Ohanyan, classic outline. Made by hand in plywood and beech, with 32 wooden checkers, dice and a carrying bag.

This is the board for the coat pocket, the train and the child's first set — the 30 cm plywood board, at the lowest price in the house. The flower is drawn rather than raised: three rings of pointed petals, one inside the other, cut as fine dark lines into a disc left bare and pale, with a scroll bracket in the same pale line work either side; the ground round them is ruled into diamond lattice, and the lid is stained honey brown around the pale work.

Open, a light honey field with pale drop-tipped points, a petal wheel drawn on each half and small brass hinges; the back cover carries a pale disc with an eternity whirl in line work at each end. For the stocking, the glovebox, the hostel common room, and the player who wants a real board that fits in a coat pocket.

Good to Know Before You Buy

Is the flower carved? No — the flower is line work. Its petals, the scroll brackets beside it and the lattice around are all cut as thin dark lines into the flat surface, and the disc is left unstained so the pattern shows pale. The whirls on the back are done the same way. Varnish over everything; nothing printed, nothing glued.
