A round disc packed with curled leaves and fleurs carved in relief, leaf scrolls in lobed panels either side, and a lattice of faceted diamonds out to the rim. This is the 60 cm / 23.6″ wooden backgammon set made by Hrachya Ohanyan, classic outline. Made by hand in beech, with 32 wooden checkers, dice and a carrying bag.

This is the board for the player who wants the whole lid worked — no plain ground anywhere, at an honest price. The disc is an arabesque: curled leaves and small fleurs interlock edge to edge, every strand cut in relief with the ground sunk pale beneath it; either side a leaf scroll curls in a lobed panel, and the outer panels are a lattice of raised diamonds, each one faceted like a stud, that catches the light in rows and carries on round the back.

Inside, the field is walnut brown, the points pale with drop tips, a petal wheel sits on each half and the hinge on the bar is plain brass. For the study, the sideboard, the man who collects boxes, and the player who wants texture in every square inch of the lid.

Good to Know Before You Buy

Is the ornament carved or pressed? Carved. The leaves of the arabesque are cut in relief from the beech with the ground sunk beneath them, the scrolls are cut the same way, and each diamond of the lattice is a small faceted pyramid raised from the surface. Stain and varnish go on last; nothing is pressed, printed or applied.
