Bold curves of the eternity sign, cut as deep grooves into a smooth disc, with leaf scrolls either side on a lattice lid. This is the 60 cm / 23.6″ Armenian wooden backgammon set made by Hrachya Ohanyan, classic outline. Handmade in beech, with 32 wooden checkers, dice and a carrying bag.

This is the board for the Armenian household that wants the sign at an everyday price, and the friend abroad who asked what the whirl means. The disc is left smooth and the rays are cut into it as wide, deep curves, so the sign reads in shadow rather than in relief; either side, a leafy scroll curls in full depth over the lattice, and the diamond lattice runs edge to edge under a dark walnut-brown stain. The back carries the same scrolls and lattice.

Inside, a dark field with pale drop-tipped points, a carved flower ornament on each half and a plain hinge on the bar. For the student's first flat, the Armenian school raffle, and the uncle who says the good boards are too nice to play on.
