The Batumi city emblem — curling waves round the word BATUMI — cut pale on a dark disc, leaf scrolls either side and faceted lattice to the rim. This is the 60 cm / 23.6″ wooden backgammon set made by Hrachya Ohanyan, classic outline. Made by hand in beech, with 32 wooden checkers, dice and a carrying bag.

This is the board for the Batumi flat, the Black Sea holiday and the Georgian family abroad — the city's own wave emblem on the lid, on a beech body. The emblem is bare wood left standing on a lowered dark disc: the loops of the waves and the block letters read pale and clean, edge to edge; either side, a leaf scroll curls in a lobed panel, and the outer panels are a lattice of raised diamonds, each one faceted, that carries on round the back.

Inside, a walnut-brown field with pale drop-tipped points, a petal wheel cut into each half and a plain brass hinge. For the seaside restaurant, the returning tourist, and the Batumeli who wants the city on the table wherever the table is.

Good to Know Before You Buy

Is the emblem carved or printed? Carved — the waves and the letters are the beech left standing while the disc around them is lowered and stained dark, so the pale emblem is bare wood, not paint or print. The leaf scrolls are cut in relief and each diamond of the lattice is a raised facet. Varnish goes over everything.

National Master Hrachya Ohanyan began his fine woodcraft in 1985 and founded his workshop in Yerevan in 2010.
