This is the 60 cm / 23.6″ luxury wooden backgammon set made by Hrachya Ohanyan, on the classic square outline. Handmade in beech, with 32 wooden checkers, dice cut from billiard balls and a branded carrying case.

This is the board for a room with good light. The scrolls are carved in deep relief, so each curl has a bright side and a dark side that trade places as the sun moves; the four teardrops between them are left smooth and catch the light whole. Around the ring the weave runs edge to edge, every strand rounded, with a small acanthus leaf holding each corner and a rope border along the rim.

Open, the inside is calm by comparison: pale and dark points with fleur-de-lys tips, a wheel ornament in a scrolled ring on each half, an ornate bronze hinge on the bar. On the back, two eternity whirls sit in smooth round dishes cut into the weave. For the player who wants the woven board with scrolls, not petals, at its heart.

Is the carving real? Yes. The scrolls and the four teardrops are carved in relief from the beech, the weave beneath and around them is carved into the same surface, and the whirls on the back sit in dishes hollowed from the wood. Stain and varnish go on last; nothing is printed, pressed or applied.
