The state emblem of Uzbekistan — the Khumo bird, wings spread over a rising sun, cotton and wheat, crescent and star — in line work on a pale disc. This is the 60 cm / 23.6″ wooden backgammon set made by Hrachya Ohanyan, classic outline. Made by hand in beech, with 32 wooden checkers, dice and a carrying bag.

This is the board for the Uzbek family in Moscow, Almaty or New York — the narda table with the country's emblem on the lid. The bird, the sun and its rays, the sprays of cotton and wheat, the crescent and the ribbon are cut as fine dark lines into a smooth pale disc, crisp as a stamp; either side, deep leaf scrolls stand off a lattice ground that runs to every edge, all in a dark walnut-brown stain, and the back repeats them.

Dark inside, with pale points tipped in drops, a flower carved into each half, a plain hinge on the bar. For the Navruz table, the Uzbek restaurant, and the guest who wants to take a piece of Tashkent home.

Good to Know Before You Buy

Is the emblem carved? Not in relief — the bird, sun, cotton, wheat and lettering are drawn into the smooth pale disc as dark lines, which keeps the emblem crisp and the surface flat. The carving proper is the leaf scrolls either side, cut deep, and the lattice across the lid. Everything is varnished over; nothing is printed or stuck on.
