A thicket of walnut branches over midnight: the trees are the lid itself, cut through and left standing, and deep navy pearl resin fills every gap between them, on both covers. This is the 60 cm / 23.6″ luxury wooden backgammon set made by Hrachya Ohanyan, classic outline, two-sided. Handmade in walnut, resin points inside, 32 checkers, dice, branded case.

This is the board for the dark study, the reader with the navy walls, and the player who wants the biggest tree board in the deepest blue. Several trunks rise from the lower edge and their branches cross and recross until the lid is a lattice of wood; the resin behind is navy shot with lighter blue, a night sky through a wood, and the gaps are small enough that the lid reads as walnut first. Closed, it stands like a screen, the same forest on both faces.

Open, the walnut is plain and warm, the points are drops of the same navy resin under carved scroll tips, a petal wheel with navy-filled spokes sits in a scrolled ring on each half, and a brass hinge stamped with the maker's mark holds the bar. For the fortieth, the flat that is all dark wood and brass, and the player who wants a board that looks lit from behind.

Good to Know Before You Buy

How does it differ from the other tree boards? This is the full-size board in the darkest blue. The medium board carries the same trees over a brighter blue, the sky-blue board has one great tree over a single pale disc, and this one has several trees over a navy pearl resin that reads almost black in low light. In every case the branches are the walnut lid cut through and left standing, the resin is poured round them and sanded flush, and the board is varnished. Nothing is printed or applied.

National Master Hrachya Ohanyan began his fine woodcraft in 1985 and founded his workshop in Yerevan in 2010.
