A plain walnut lid with a dark ridge of heartwood running across it like a hill, and inside, points and wheels filled with pearl-white resin. This is the 60 cm / 23.6″ wooden backgammon set made by Hrachya Ohanyan, classic outline. Handmade in walnut, with resin-filled points inside, 32 checkers, dice cut from billiard balls and a branded case.

This is the board for the minimalist flat, the desk that already has enough on it, and the player who wants the surprise on the inside. Closed, it is one face of pale walnut, varnished and otherwise left alone, with a streak of dark heartwood rising across the middle like a ridge line — every board's grain falls differently, so this lid will be its own. Straight edges, square corners, a cast clasp: it passes for a box until it opens.

Open, the pearl appears: each point is a drop of pearl-white resin under a carved scroll tip, the petal wheel on each half is filled the same way inside a ring of white and silver scrolls, all level with the walnut, and a stamped brass hinge sits on the bar. For the modern living room, the wedding list, and the player who wants the colour where the game is.
