Half a circle on each cover, a whole one when you open it. Each outer face of this board carries a half-round panel of pale wood filled edge to edge with scrolling ornament — curls, tendrils and leaf-tips cut into the wood and flooded with green epoxy, so the pattern reads like moss-coloured lace under glass. Around each half-circle master Hrachya Ohanyan carved a field of fine star lattice inside rope-and-bead borders, stained a deep honey brown. Both covers carry the ornament, and if you open the board and lay it face-down, the two halves meet in one full circle. A luxury wooden backgammon set made from a single piece of beech at the full 23.6″ / 60 cm, with more colour on it than carving alone can give.

Undo the cast-bronze clasps and the 23.6″ / 60 cm wooden backgammon board opens on a wheel ornament in a scrolled ring worked into each half, pale points tipped with fleur-de-lys flourishes and an ornate bronze hinge on the centre bar. Thirty-two checkers in light and dark wood, a dice set and the branded carrying case come with it. Green Lace

The scroll that curls into a leaf that curls into another scroll is the oldest ornament in the world, and it has always been carved in one colour — the colour of the stone or the wood. Master Ohanyan cuts it the traditional way and then does something the old carvers could not: he floods the cuts with green resin, so the pattern sits in the pale wood like the inlay in a manuscript border. Two half-circles, one on each cover, so the board is never lying the wrong way up. On a nardi table it is the one thing in the room that looks as if it grew there.
