Bare walnut branches over a pour of blue resin on both covers, the wood left standing, the blue filling the gaps between them. This is the 50 cm / 19.6″ luxury wooden backgammon set made by Hrachya Ohanyan, classic outline, two-sided. Handmade in walnut, with resin-filled points inside, 32 checkers, dice cut from billiard balls and a branded case.

This is the board for the flat with the navy sofa, the friend who says walnut is too brown, and the player who wants the smaller board for the coffee table. The trees are what is left of the lid: trunks and branches cut out of the walnut, crossing and interlacing, with a blue resin — inky at the edges, paling to white where it swirls — poured into every space between them and polished level with the wood. Turn it over and the same forest runs across the back.

Inside, the blue comes back in the points — each one a drop of the same resin under a carved scroll tip — and in the ring around the petal wheel on each half, with a brass hinge stamped with the maker's mark on the bar. For the housewarming, the anniversary, and the player who wants the trees on both covers and the walnut in between.

Good to Know Before You Buy

Are the trees painted or carved? Carved, then poured. Every trunk and branch is the walnut lid itself, cut through so the tree stands as wood; the deep blue is resin poured around it, cured, sanded flush and polished with the rest of the board. The drop-shaped points and the rings inside are filled the same way. The board is varnished; nothing is printed or painted.
