Walnut trees against a bright turquoise sky: the trunks and branches are the lid itself, cut through and left standing, with pearl-turquoise resin poured into every space between them, on both covers. This is the 60 cm / 23.6″ luxury wooden backgammon set made by Hrachya Ohanyan, classic outline, two-sided. Handmade in walnut, 32 checkers, dice, branded case.

This is the board for the white-walled flat, the coastal house, and the player who wants the tree board in daylight blue rather than navy. The branches cross and recross from edge to edge, so the lid is more wood than colour, and the turquoise behind them shifts from cerulean to a greener teal with a pearl sheen, like shallow water over sand. Both covers carry the same forest; closed on its hinge the board stands like a folding screen.

Open, the walnut is plain and figured, the points are drops of the same turquoise resin under carved scroll tips, a petal wheel with turquoise-filled spokes sits in a scrolled ring on each half, and a brass hinge stamped with the maker's mark holds the bar. For the summer wedding, the pool house, and the player who wants a board the colour of the sea.

Is the resin the same on both covers? Yes — both covers are cut with the same trees and poured with the same pearl-turquoise resin, though because each pour swirls its own way, the two faces are never identical. The branches are the walnut lid itself, cut through and left standing; the resin is poured round them, cured, sanded flush and polished, and the points inside are filled the same way. The board is varnished. Nothing is printed or applied.

National Master Hrachya Ohanyan began his fine woodcraft in 1985 and founded his workshop in Yerevan in 2010.
