Slices of real branches, bark and growth rings intact, set in a red epoxy clouded with smoky blue and polished flush on both covers. This is the 60 cm / 23.6″ luxury wooden backgammon set made by Hrachya Ohanyan, classic outline. Handmade in beech, with 32 wooden checkers, dice cut from billiard balls and a branded carrying case.

This is the board for the home with no carving in it: here the wood itself is the picture. Dozens of branch discs, coin-sized to palm-sized, sit edge to edge in the resin, each cut across the grain so the bark, the rings and the radial cracks show, the red epoxy between them running to smoky blue in places, finished glass-flat. The second cover carries the same mosaic, so there is no plain side, and both are framed in pale beech under a golden varnish.

Inside it is quieter: a natural beech field, the dark points filled with wine-red epoxy and the pale ones left as wood, each tipped with a scrolled fleur-de-lys in line work, a spoked wheel in a scrolled ring on each half, and an ornate bronze hinge on the bar. For the new flat, the design studio, and the player who was never going to buy a brown board.

Are the branch slices real? Yes. Every disc is a cross-section of a real branch, bark and rings included, set into the resin and polished flush with it. Because the slices come from real wood, every board is laid out differently — yours will carry the same colours and the same kind of discs, but not this exact pattern.

National Master Hrachya Ohanyan began his fine woodcraft in 1985 and founded his workshop in Yerevan in 2010.
